Can I Take My Dog On a Course?

We want everyone at an orienteering event to have a good experience, including your dog. With this goal in mind, please adhere to the following guidelines while orienteering with your dog:

  1. Make sure the venue allows dogs. It is your responsibility to know the rules of the venue.
  2. Use a short leash (6 feet or shorter) and keep your dog under control at all times.
  3. Start: don’t take your dog through the Start. Either tie him up away from the start and pick him up after you start or have a friend hold him until after you start. At most events, several people start at once and a dog can get in the way.
  4. Controls: before you get to a control, look around. If another orienteer is approaching, allow him/her to punch ahead of you. Once you’ve punched, move yourself and your dog away from the control as quickly as possible so you don’t block the control or interfere with others’ access to it.
  5. Finish: look around. If another orienteer is approaching, allow him/her to punch ahead of you. After you’ve punched, move yourself and your dog away from the finish punch.
